JUDGE JAMES J. SWEENEY
Judge Sweeney was elected to the Eighth Appellate District Court in 2001. He is a graduate of Cleveland State University (1970) and received his J.D. from Cleveland-Marshall College of Law (1973).
He served in the United States Army (1960-1962) and, after admission to the Bar, served as a Cuyahoga County Assistant Prosecutor (1974-1979), an assistant Attorney General (1979-1981) and in the private practice of law until elected Judge of the Common Pleas Court, General Division (1981-1997).
Judge Sweeney was elected and served as Administrative Judge and Presiding Judge of the General Division (1993-1997), was on the Board of Commissioners on Grievances and Discipline of the Judiciary (1983-1989) and was President of the National Conference of Metropolitan Courts (1994-1995).
